Riverside men’s tennis beat Cary High School 5-1 on Monday to advance to the second round of the state tournament.

This win was historically significant for the team because it was the first singles round playoff win in program history.

Seniors Alex Abrams-Garrett and Saul Gonzalez, junior Jake Brennan, sophomore Walter Isard and freshmen Zach Robinson and Caleb Portenier all won their matchups.

Brennan, said that the team showed progress from earlier in the season.

“I saw a lot of improvement from a lot of the players on the team,” he said.

One player who helped secure the win was Walter Isard. Isard’s match went to a tiebreak, which he eventually won, helping the team advance.

“You play best out of three when you tie the first two, you’re gonna do a tie break,” said Brennan. “He went to that and ended up winning, which clutched the match.”

The 13th-ranked Pirates play the fourth-ranked Sanderson High School in round two of playoffs today.
