The Pirates beat Northern 4-0 on Thursday to bring their overall record to 4-5-3
Assistant coach Sarah Cade said she is happy with the way the team is playing.
“I thinkfor this point in the season, we’re pretty happy with our performance,” she said.
Riverside got off to a fast start this fall and beat teams like D.H. Conley Garinger. But the team hit a scoring drought against several tough nonconference opponents..
The Pirates were shut out six times during a three-week stretch in August and September, but strong defense allowed them to escape with 0-0 ties against Carrboro and Durham Academy.
The four goals they scored against Northern is the most in any game this year, and it came just as the team begins conference play.
“I think we always get really excited for our conference games,” she said.
Cade also said she was personally excited to face off Chapel Hill, while the players are excited about facing off against Southern later this year.
Senior experience will be a key factor for the men’s soccer team this season. Almost the entire starting lineup is back from last year.
“We have 14 seniors on the team this year,” said Cade, “so we’re looking for that core group that is our stability and what we’re leaning on.”
The Pirates next travel to Hillside on Tuesday.
