Super Bowl LIX will take place at Caesars Superdome in the Big Easy—New Orleans, Louisiana. This year’s showdown on February 9 features two titans of the NFL- the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles.
This isn’t a new matchup. These powerhouses clashed in Super Bowl LVII during the 2022 season, where the Chiefs emerged victorious, 38-35, after trailing for most of the game. The following year, the Chiefs went on to defeat the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII, winning 25-22.
Kansas City has now made five Super Bowl appearances in the last six years and is seeking an unprecedented three-peat. If the Chiefs win, they will be the first team in NFL history to accomplish this feat.
Despite KC’s dominance, the Eagles enter this matchup as the favorites. After a 2-2 start, Philadelphia won 12 of its final 13 games to close the season. In the playoffs, the Eagles convincingly defeated the Packers, Rams, and my Commanders on their path to the Super Bowl. Both teams have their own strengths and weaknesses. The Chiefs boast a formidable defense, allowing just 19.2 points per game (fourth in the NFL), and their pass rush has been relentless, recording 10 combined sacks in their postseason victories over the Texans and Bills.
However, Kansas City’s biggest concern is pass protection. The Chiefs’ offensive line allowed Patrick Mahomes to be sacked 36 times in the regular season and five more in the playoffs—the most in his career. The left tackle position, one of the most critical in football, has been a revolving door. Their starter at the position, Wanya Morris and the backup DJ Humphries have been injured the majority of the year which caused offensive guard, Joe Thuney to step up at the position. If Mahomes faces constant pressure, securing the three-peat will be an uphill battle.
The Eagles have the best defense in the NFL, combined with an elite rushing attack. Their physical, “bully ball” mentality on both sides of the field makes them a dangerous team capable of beating anyone.
However, their offense has leaned heavily on the run game, making them somewhat predictable. This run game is led by future hall of famer Saquan Barkley. Barkley has had one of the best individual seasons for a running back in history. He has compiled 2,005 rushing yards which is 2nd most in NFL history, only 100 yards behind Eric Dickerson’s record in 1984. He is the ninth player in history to achieve a two thousand yard rushing season.
If the Chiefs can develop a solid defensive scheme to neutralize Barkley and the rest of Philadelphia’s ground attack, they may have a chance to pull off the upset.
Personally, I’ll be rooting for the Eagles to bring home another Lombardi Trophy to Philadelphia. No matter the outcome, this Sunday marks the game of the year.
