The Riverside men’s soccer team beat Ashley High School 1-0 on Tuesday to advance to the third round of the state playoffs.
Senior Isaac Arrowood scored the winning goal in the last minutes of the second half.
Riverside (12-7-4) is the lowest seed left and will now face off against the third seeded team, Wakefield High School(20-4) tonight at 7pm.
“It will be a tough game but if we have hope and work as a team we will win,” said senior forward Gustavo Lagos.
The Pirates’ last three games have all been decided by one goal. Riverside has won its last four road games and have not allowed a single goal in any of them.
Wakefield beat Riverside 7-2 during a match in September. The Wolverines beat Rolesville High School 5-1 to advance to the round of 16.
Following a 2-1 home loss to Jordan last week, the Pirates have become a better defensive team.
“We have been training and working on getting better every day,” Lagos said. “The team is a completely different team than the one Wakefield last played.”
