Latausha Simpson is taking on her first year as an earth science teacher at not just Riverside, but in America, too.
Simpson taught in Jamaica for fourteen years before coming to Riverside.
“I had a passion for it,” she said. “I love to interact with people. That’s why teaching is my profession.”
Simpson has noticed big differences between Jamaican schooling and American schooling so far.
“In Jamaica students don’t act like this,” she said. “Once they enter their classes, it’s a must that you be polite. You don’t blurt out things and you can’t use cell phones in class.”
There is also strict uniform policy in Jamaican schools.
“We don’t have the freedom to just wear anything we want,” she said.
Simpson believes that students work best in groups. It’s been especially helpful this fall, as some kids are still adjusting to her Jamaican accent.
“When their peers are explaining a scenario to them I think they understand better,” she said.
