Inspiring youth has always been a passion for lead Custodian, Michael Cureton, and he has been able to continue doing this at Riverside.
Cureton began working at Riverside on December 22, 2022. Originally from Charlotte, he moved to Durham to help take care of his mother-in-law. He has now lived in Durham for 28 years with his wife, daughter, and son.
Cureton attended North Carolina A&T State University through a wrestling scholarship and then graduated from Christopher Newport University with a major in business administration.
Before working at Riverside he was a manager at a chip manufacturing company now called Wolfspeed. After retiring from the company, he took this job as an opportunity to work in Durham while further engaging with this community.
“I really have a heart for youth,” Cureton said. “I used to be a Youth Pastor at a Chapel Hill Church called Celebration Assembly of God. I lived in Durham but all of my outreach ministry I did in Chapel Hill. I wanted to work in Durham, so I can say I did live and work here.”
He also sees himself making an impact on students at Riverside.
“Sometimes I see guys in the bathroom, class has started, I encourage them, I say ‘Get out of the bathroom, go get your education, go learn something today,’” he said. “Recently, I think they are starting to hear me. When I walk in, they just leave. I don’t even have to say anything. I think I’m making an impact. I hope so.”
If his new nickname is any indication, students seem to agree.
“I call him ‘Uncle Mike’ because he’s like an uncle to me,” senior Essat Seales said. “He gives good advice, he be listening to the Gospel music, he be dancing, and he’s just funny.”
According to Seales, he has made students feel this way since the beginning of school.
“He’s very loving and kind to us,” she said.
Working in an environment with young people is one of Cureton’s favorite parts of the job.
“It really keeps me young,” he said. “I think that the bad part is I don’t get to go to your games and stuff because I work from six in the morning to four.”
Because Cureton has a background in wrestling, he has also wanted to become a volunteer wrestling coach, but ultimately his schedule restricts him from doing so.
“I just wish I had more involvement in sports,” he said.
For a big part of his life, Cureton has also traveled to different countries in Africa preaching and doing missionary work.
“I encouraged people about their faith, using your faith to motivate yourself to do things,” he said.
He is also a veteran.
“I was in the US Navy for 6 years,” he said. “I’m glad to have served my country. That means a lot.”
Inspirar a la juventud siempre ha sido una pasión para el Conserje Principal, Michael Cureton, y ha podido continuar haciéndolo aquí en Riverside.
Cureton comenzó a trabajar en Riverside el 22 de diciembre de 2022. Originalmente de Charlotte, se mudó a Durham para ayudar a cuidar a su suegra. Ha vivido en Durham durante 28 años con su esposa, su hija y su hijo.
Cureton asistió a la Universidad Estatal A&T de Carolina del Norte gracias a una beca de lucha libre y luego se graduó de la Universidad Christopher Newport con especialización en administración de empresas.
Antes de trabajar en Riverside, fue gerente de una empresa de fabricación de chips que ahora se llama Wolf Speed. Después de jubilarse de la empresa, tomó este trabajo como una oportunidad para trabajar en Durham y al mismo tiempo seguir interactuando con esta comunidad.
“Realmente tengo un corazón para la juventud,” dijo Cureton. “Antes yo era pastor de jóvenes en una iglesia de Chapel Hill llamada Celebración Asamblea de Dios. Viví en Durham pero todo mi ministerio de extensión lo hice en Chapel Hill. Quería trabajar en Durham, así que puedo decir que viví y trabajé aquí.”
También se ve a sí mismo generando un impacto en los estudiantes de Riverside.
“A veces veo chicos en el baño, la clase ha comenzado, los animo, les digo: ‘Sal del baño, ve a educarte, aprende algo hoy,’” dijo. “Recientemente creo que están empezando a escucharme. Cuando entro, simplemente se van. Ni siquiera tengo que decir nada. Creo que estoy teniendo un impacto. Eso espero.”
Si su nuevo apodo es una indicación, los estudiantes parecen estar de acuerdo.
“Lo llamo ‘tío Mike’ porque es como un tío para mí”, dijo el estudiante de último año Essat Seales. “Da buenos consejos, escucha música gospel, baila y es simplemente divertido.”
Según Seales, él ha hecho que los estudiantes se sientan así desde el comienzo de la escuela.
“Es muy cariñoso y amable con nosotros,” dijo.
Trabajar en un entorno con gente joven es una de las partes favoritas del trabajo de Cureton.
“Realmente me mantiene joven,” dijo. “Creo que lo malo es que no puedo ir a sus juegos y esas cosas porque trabajo desde las seis de la mañana hasta las cuatro.”
Debido a que Cureton tiene experiencia en la lucha libre, también quiso convertirse en entrenador de lucha libre voluntario, pero finalmente su agenda le impide hacerlo.
“Sólo desearía tener más participación en los deportes,” dijo.
Durante gran parte de su vida, Cureton también ha viajado a diferentes países de África predicando y realizando labor misional.
“Animé a la gente sobre su fe, usando su fe para motivarse a hacer cosas,” dijo.
También es un veterano.
“Estuve en la Marina de los EE. UU. durante 6 años,” dijo. “Me alegra haber servido a mi país. Eso significa mucho.”
