Riverside needs to bring back fraternities and sororities.

The Black community is filled with different traditions, beliefs, and interests. I say Riverside needs these organizations because school has gotten boring. Other than sports and cultural arts there’s nothing to get excited about.  People have even transferred because of this.

Fraternities and sororities can bring back that spark and a sense of belonging, especially for the Black student community.

During Black History Month, we talk about celebrating our heritage, uplifting our voices, and creating spaces where Black students can thrive. So why not bring back a tradition that has been a showcase for Black excellence for generations?

The “Divine Nine” are the historically Black fraternities and sororities that are part of the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC). These groups are all about giving back to the community, being smart, and lifting up Black people.

Riverside has nearly 500 Black students. Fraternities and sororities are the missing piece to bringing us together. I’m talking about opportunities for Black students to shine, to find pride and purpose outside of sports and the current extra curricular activities.

Riverside used to have a Theta Phi Psi chapter, believe it or not. And Hillside and Southern have chapters of fraternities and sororities going strong.

These chapters could give Black students a platform to make a difference, build lasting bonds, and maybe even help people get their lives together, kids who are feeling like they’re going down the wrong path and need something to help them get out.

I’m not saying fraternities and sororities are the cure to all problems, but they offer something that Riverside’s Black student population needs: a sense of belonging.

They provide a space for Black students to connect with their culture, learn new skills, have a fresh new mindset, and give back to the community.

It’s time to bring back the spice and give Riverside students something to be proud of. This isn’t just about fun and games. It’s about putting in on our future and giving the next class something to look forward to.
