Men’s soccer looking toward a successful season

After making a run into the third round of states last year, the Pirates are ready to prove last year’s success wasn’t a fluke.

“I think we’re getting better every year,” said senior captain Liam Gergen.

The men’s soccer team is currently 5-5-4, and began conference matches last week with a win over Hillside.

Junior William Crutchfield believes the team’s success comes from intensive preseason work.

“We don’t just go out to the field and just pass the ball around,” he said. “We work on the things outside the box.”

“We work on our physical aspects so we have 100% energy in the last fourth of the game.”

Senior captain Noah Wenzlik describes the team as competitive but united.

“It’s a tighter-knit community than most teams,” he said.

“We get along really well, so it’s kind of like a little family inside of Riverside,” said Gergen.

The Pirates face Chapel Hill at home on Tuesday. Kickoff is at 6:45 pm.
