Three Wins, Nine Days

Riverside Football barrels through the competition to claim the Tri-6 Conference Championship

The 2018 Riverside varsity football team won the Tri-6 Conference Championship last Friday night, November 9th, marking their first conference championship victory since 2002.

Riverside was down 20-19 with 1:48 left in the game, when Tyreik Winstead forced a fumble on the Falcons 40-yard line. Riverside proceeded to drive quickly down the field, and eventually get inside the 5-yard line from a spectacular catch by Quinton Freeman from quarterback Landin Sledge. The drive was capped off by a game winning 24-yard field goal from kicker Jacob Bowers, and the rest was history.

Running back De’anthony Bright rushed for 302 yards in the victory, which is his career high, as well as putting him over the 2,000 yard mark for the season. His 2,024 yards is the most by any running back under head coach Corey Lea, and he has accumulated 20 touchdowns over the course of the season. It is Lea’s first conference championship with Riverside, and they are going to their first playoff appearance since 2013.

Riverside will play on November 23rd at home for their first playoff game, but their opponent is currently unknown. With the conference championship came a first-round playoff bye as well, which will provide with two weeks to get ready for the big game. They will play either 5-seed Jack Britt or 12-seed Seventy-First, and look to bring home Riverside’s first playoff win since 2006.
