“I want to experience the culture, the students, the food.”

Stephanie Rose joins the science department

Stephanie Rose is Riverside’s newest Biology and Marine science teacher, and she’s ready to assist students in whatever ways she can.

Rose has taught at many different schools, the most recent being Paul Bogle, a high school in St. Thomas, Jamaica.

Rose came to the United States for a variety of reasons.

“I want to experience the culture, the students, the food, and so forth,” she said.

Rose became a science teacher because when she was young, she had a teacher that she aspired to emulate.

“I used to have this science teacher that I admired so much.” said Rose, “When I used to go to her class, even when I didn’t understand [how] to do stuff, she always found new, engaging activities to keep us engaged through the class time.”

Teaching isn’t Rose’s only passion. She majored in football (soccer) at GC Foster College, which has a reputation as one of the Caribbean’s primary sports institutions and is known for training world class coaches.

“They are leaders in Physical Education, Health, and Wellness,” according to a Jamaica Information Service feature on the college.

“My favorite part of being a teacher is when my students meet their expectations [and] goals,” she said.

She teaches one Marine science class and two Biology courses. The advice she gives to students preparing for advanced science courses is not to be afraid to seek support.

“No matter what you face, just ask for help,” she said.
