Rummaging through the Racks at Bull City Flea

By Emmett Flynn

The Bull City Vintage Market has become a staple event for vintage lovers and Durhamites alike.

Beyond the racks of curated clothing at the Bull City Vintage Market is a spot for familiar faces and shared stories—a place where Durham’s love for unique finds comes to life.

Once a month, the best vintage clothing resellers from as far as Georgia come in with their best items to expand Durham’s wardrobe.  If you’re a regular to vintage markets, you’ll likely know some faces. Most of the vendors tend to travel together, bouncing from market to market with their fellow resellers.

“I do this for the community” said one seller “We’re all really close, like a family almost.”

For many, reselling vintage clothes is also their primary income. And it’s often more than a full time job. Some sellers spend hours just on the roads, bouncing between thrift stores and wholesalers, looking for anything worth selling. Then there’s sourcing, pricing and driving.

“When I go to a store, I look through every item, every rack and every bin” said longtime seller Revenge Vintage.

The market goes deeper than just a place to resell old clothes, for many, it’s a source of nostalgia,

“My favorite part of doing this is bringing things back to people that they maybe haven’t seen since they were kids,” said one of the sellers.
