Winter clothing drive opens this week

The winter clothing drive is ready for students.

This year the clothing drive is this Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday morning during first and second period in Riverside’s media center.

“We noticed a need,” said Jenny Bailey, an Occupational Course of Study (OCS) teacher who helped organize the drive. “Students were coming with the same coat every day, and it was dirty.”

The event also aligns with the OCS curriculum.

“[Students] can earn part of their graduation credit through work hours,” said Bailey. “About 30 students helped put it on.”

“What we did is go upstairs and gather the clothes, we took it into the library and sorted it into sizes and types of clothes,” said senior Madison Pearce, a student who helped organize and set up the event. “The hardest part was carrying some of the clothes. They can be heavy, but luckily we have a lot of students to help.”

Bailey hopes the clothing drive can become an annual event.

“Last year was our first year but we hope to continue,” said Bailey.

Bailey added that teachers who brought their entire class to the media center to see it last year generated the most interest. For example, last year English teacher Laura brought her entire class up to the media center.

“The purpose of the program is to provide students with clothes who might not be able to afford it or might not have the opportunity to get new clothes around Christmas,” she said.

“I think it’s important because a lot of kids need clothes and they can’t afford it,” said Pearce. “It’s great for anybody, I have found stuff that is really useful, too.”

The drive is still taking donations and is in need of male clothing especially. All donations can be dropped off to room 142.
