Swimmers head to states

Twenty Riverside students competed in the NC 4A Regional swim meet on Saturday in Greensboro, and five will move on to states later this week. 

Senior Ryan Weaver won the men’s 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke events. Weaver, sophomore Otto Schonwalder, senior Ben Smith, and sophomore Asa Gerend, who is homeschooled but lives in Riverside’s district and can compete in Pirate sports, finished second in the 400-yard freestyle relay. 

Smith (500-yard freestyle), Gerend (50-yard freestyle), freshman Vivian Brennan (1-meter diving), sophomore Elodie Mitchell (200-yard freestyle) also qualified for the state meet in other events. The state championships are Thursday, Feb. 10 at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary, NC.
