Field Hockey and Volleyball Briefs

The Pirate’s field hockey team has again gotten off to a rough start this year. They are currently 0-9, with eight games remaining in the season.

Emmer Rice has scored the only goal so far this year in a 3-1 loss against in-town rival Jordan High School. The team will again face off against Jordan for senior night on October 3.

Senior captain Mimi Haase said that she was, “excited to see how much this team could grow through the rest of the season.”

Next week the Pirates have games on the first, second, and third of October against Carrboro, Cape Fear Academy, and Jordan.

The Riverside women’s volleyball team is already on the verge of doubling their win total from last year. They are currently 5-7, whereas last year they finished with a record of 3-18.

Contributing to the team’s big improvement is senior outside hitter, Sydney Pearce. Pearce has 200 kills on the season with a 48 percent hitting percentage. Junior Ava Daniels also has the second highest hitting percentage on the team at 47% along with 105 kills.

Senior Camryn Atkinson leads the defensive side of the team with 10.8 digs per match, followed by Pearce, with 10.2. Senior Eliza Dukes has also been a major part of the Pirate defense with 17 blocks this season.

The upcoming week holds matches against Southern, Green Level, and Cary for the Pirates volleyball team.
