Heritage in their own words: Lead custodian Delfina Contreras

Delfina Contreras is Riverside’s lead custodian. She has worked at school for 7 years and came to the United States from Veracruz, Mexico in search of more opportunities.

The Pirates’ Hook (PH): What brought you to Durham?

Delfina Contreras (DC): Here in the United States there is a lot of opportunities. There are more jobs here than in Mexico.

PH: How do you or your family celebrate your heritage?

DC: Together. I celebrate it with my family because it is a big celebration. During Hispanic heritage month specifically I like to dance. This time is full of happiness.

PH: How does your heritage influence your work at Riverside?
DC: Our language is Spanish but we try to understand and speak English because we are in a country where it is necessary, so it is a big effort coming from each one of us. Learning two languages is not easy, but we try.

PH: What is your favorite part of your job?

DC: I love everything here.

PH: What elements of Hispanic heritage do you see at Riverside or in Durham?

DC: I see my people are really happy.

PH: What do you miss most about Mexico?

DC: My family. I don’t have any family here, that is what I miss the most. My mom and brothers are in Mexico.
