Alumni Spotlight: Charlotte Hayes

Charlotte Hayes (‘99) has fond memories of Riverside’s darkroom.

Attached to the photography classroom, it’s where students use chemicals to develop the film from old-fashioned cameras and print their pictures.

“Digital was only just getting started and only in really fancy cameras at the time,” Hayes said. “So I took a darkroom class at Riverside my junior year.”

Hayes does photography and graphic design for her job. She became interested in photography after taking a photography class during her junior year at Riverside.

“[I like] photography over graphic design, although I do like them both,” she said. “I find it’s more dynamic, it lets me connect with people and has more puzzles in solving lighting and posing challenges.”

She wishes that she knew the value of trying new things when she was in high school.

“All experiences or knowledge are not wasted because you won’t know how they will fit together in the future,” she said. “They often fit together in unpredictable ways.”
